Looking for a way to boost your energy and your mood? Look down; the answer may lie in your own two feet. Running is more than just a good way to get in shape. For many people, running is a lifestyle that boasts many physical and mental benefits. Participating in group running events is a great way to make it a part of your routine.
Whether you are an avid runner or a beginner who prefers to cruise the track, there are many benefits to participating in 5K events. So, in the spirit of the upcoming Achieva Run for GOOD 5K, here are five reasons why you should definitely lace up your running shoes this year:
Reason 1: Feel good inside and out
Preparing, training and running races have amazing health benefits. Not only will you look better, you will feel better! Your body will thank you for physical exercise, no matter what form. So if you prefer to walk the track, you will still get a warm fuzzy feeling inside and out.
Exercise releases endorphins, which are responsible for that mood boosting “runner’s high” we feel after a bout of rigorous exercise. Physical and mental benefits – what’s not to love?
Reason 2: It’s a measurable accomplishment
There aren’t many things more personally satisfying than accomplishing a goal you set for yourself. This can start with a simple daily goal like running a quarter-mile more than you did the day before. It’s motivation that you can strive to be better every day.
Completing any type of race and crossing that finish line is assurance to yourself that you can – and will – accomplish anything you set out to do. A 5K is a perfect place to start as a first goal. Once you accomplish that, you may be on your way to completing your first marathon (baby steps, of course)!
Reason 3: Supporting a good cause
Many races are put on in the name of a good cause. For Achieva, all of our race events benefit the Achieva Foundation, which supports local schools.
Running for a cause may be the deciding factor for many people to want to participate, so it’s essential to find a cause that is important to you. This way, when you’re running, you know that you’re doing it for more than just yourself.
Reason 4: You can run at your own pace
There is no reason to be too intimidated to participate in a 5K. Whether you are naturally competitive or prefer to do the laid back route, it’s completely up to you.
It’s not about how fast you are. Many people prefer to take their time and others prefer to have the fastest race possible. At the end of the day, it’s all about having the most fun you can.
Reason 5: Be an inspiration to others
Seeing you succeed at your goals may inspire others to want to succeed as well. The qualities you portray when you are working to accomplish a goal are admirable and inspiring to others.
People get motivated to do well for themselves when they see those around them doing good. All the more reason to inspire, motivate and cheer on your friends every day!
Remember – it’s perfectly fine to start small and work your way to bigger goals. Even going for a walk around your neighborhood is a starting point. It’s all about commitment and the determination to do GOOD for yourself and others.
